Kwara Lawmakers suspends 2018 budget over poly fees crisis

The Kwara state House of assembly (KWHA) has suspended further consideration of 2018 state Appropriation bill following the refusal of the state Government to implement its directive on school fees saga at the state Polytechnic llorin.

Lawmakers on Wednesday last week in a resolution advised the state government to direct the management of the Polytechnic to revert to old school fees.

The House in its resolution after adopting the report of its committee on education said the measure was in view of the current economic hardship in the country.

The Speaker, Dr Ali Ahmad while reading the resolution of the House at the end of Committees meeting which lasted over two hours wondered why the management of the state Polytechnic refuse to take old school fees from the students.

He said N300m had already been provided and approved in the 2017 budget before the House for the state Polytechnic to cater for shortfall in the fund realize from payment of school fees.

The Speaker while announcing suspension of further consideration on the budget summoned the state Commissioner for Tertiary Education Aminat Hammed, the Secretary to the Government Isiaka Gold and Special Adviser on Tertiary institutions.

The House directed the officers summoned to appear before it on Wednesday by 4pm prompt for clarification on the 2018 budget for the state Polytechnic.a�Z

The officers summoned according to the Speaker are also expected to explain why the state Polytechnic ignored the directive of the House on school fees payment.
